Secondo

J'ai commencé par une cassette MAXELL SAX-60 HIGH POSITION IECII/TYPE II

Source : Platine CD Marantz CD-94

Musique : frankie goes to hollywod : the person guide

That deck is top of the line for that model year. This is a deck that is much better than most people think. It has direct drive capstan motor which may need oiling at this point but I have never known one to fail even to this date.

Do I know about this model? YES, I have about 8 of them here in my place. I will be selling some but they are not likely to be cheap. In addition to the correct internal adjustments in the unit for each of the tapes, the unit also has an automatic tape adjustment system which can store three types of tape as well as a 4th.

The auto cal system needs to be set up correctly or it will miss. I have taken units and corrected the auto cal system so that it takes any tape and hits within 1/2 dB of the required setting. The only weakness in the unit is going to be in the fast wind idler/tire system. This is likely to need to be renewed.

If the unit has been sitting for a long time then it like any unit should be gone through to be restored to perfection. No it is not a Nakamichi but the only thing the Nak has that this may not is better heads. I have used these from the time that they came out and I have actually bought them at $400 when they were new. They retailed at $850. I hope this gives you some idea of what you are dealing with. The unit has three Processors in it as well. It is one of their better under $1000 units.

Just so you know this is NOT dual capstan which is why it is good. Dual capstans give more trouble than good.
The cam belt is pretty easy to replace just don't break the nylon forked item that hooks onto the pot- those have been gone for a long time.

This is one of my favorite decks which is why I have about 8 of them.

The V900X is a very complicated unit. There is a board on top that manages the Auto cal function and there has been some mods done to it.

This is the board that needs tight calibration as the rest of that function relies on this. I think you would be surprised at how the units works and the end result. I think the V900X was only bettered by decks like the Z6000 and maybe the C-1. I have seen them on Ebay a few times. Most people sell them because a cam belt is broken or the $.50 cassette compartment light is out.

In this deck, no cassette compartment light means no function as the reel table get the light source through a prism from this lamp. It should be changed to a LED.

If you are adjusting them to 1/2 dB you must already know how. The major fault in this deck is the lack of three record level and bias pots for each tape and each channel. I have also determined that some of the heat sinks get too warm for my liking. I have therefore taken some off and augmented them with additional sinks added to the ones in there to help lower the temp.

I am not sure of the reason for the auto cal mod on the board but that yellow glue they used usually gets removed as it just is not needed. At the same time this is located around the power caps on the board for the power supply.

This is one of the reasons I change the Electrolytics on that board for new and in some cases increase the value by 50% in uFd. It is at this time the glue is removed, chipped away or comes off with the old cap.

The unit is also a touchy unit to work on. Notonly are there many solder joints that are poor or not up to aerospace grade, but there are daughter cards sticking up that could get upset and cause transport malfunction. I have had working units go bad on me when I was changing the cam belt and after a time of letting them sit they seem to reset themselves- sometimes.

The super cap for memory on the Autocal board need changing all the time now.
I have been replacing the .1F with the .47F types from Mouser which buys you more time. So far I have found one unit with a open coil on this board that was there from manufacture.

It was labelled 882 I think and I found one on a parted out 122 MK II board so I was able to repair the unit where people before me were changing all kinds of stuff and missed this defective component. The audio signal had a lot of high frequency noise on one channel and the coil was in the feedback path of the op amp and being open this one did not take the high frequency noise out of the signal until I got there and made the correction.

The coil had a broken coil element at the mount so it was probably defective when they installed it. It was not hit with a driver or defective in any other way- I have replacement coils now from Mouser of the same value in stock but chances are I will not see one again from now on- you know how that goes.

Another weakness is people break the nylon fork on the feedback pot a lot. This then requires me to make a new hybrid part using the knurled section of nylon and attaching it to a new Aluminum fork I make and epoxy it to the old part. So far this has been able to look bullet proof and I make sure to round off the aluminum edges to not wear through the cam gear and I apply grease.

The movement of the cam gear and pot are not perfectly round so there is some shift as the gear rotates.

The calibration is done after the basic setting is done with what tape you decide to use as a base type and then through many trial and error tests as you may know. Each one taking at least 10 seconds. When you are done then you can put a Sony XR metal tape in and although it is a 2dB off from a tape like XL II or TDK D, that the Auto cal is the only way this deck will compensate for that in the fancy chips on that AUTO Cal board.

To say this deck has three processors is not far from the truth. The meter assembly is also a matter of concern. I have seen a couple that have missing segments on them and it seems to be due to the drivers. These drivers are loacted as in the assembly off that meter display so there is a lot of time used to go in and fix one. The chips is one of those MSL9 numbers.

I have one or two here but then I own some of these machines too. I have never had that kind of trouble with my machines. Yes, the rubber goes out on all of them as well as eventually the cassette compartment lamp. I did not find a way to get an LED to work in that location- it might be bright enough but lacks the 180 degree dispersion angle.

So for now I am sticking with JKL 12V 40mA lamps.

Any other questions? Yes, you should remove the power board to get the transport out for work- this is why I use a 2 X 4" piece of wood on the bench to hold the deck up while working on the transport. They are not hard to fix once you get to the transport. I have the special Idler tires that I ordered from a place in CA.

Oh, in some very dirty units I come across there is the need to replace the tact switches as the one in there are so intermittent that they don't seem to work all the time. Who let a nice $800 deck get dirty like this? Well some people.

The new switches going in at the function keyboard or the right side counter board all make the deck work like new. Nobody said tact switches last forever anyway. Digikey has them cheap.
